Mass hysteria cases have been reported many times throughout history and have continued to occur even in the modern world. In “Mass Hysteria in Upstate New York” by Ruth Graham, the author states that many cases of Tourette’s-like symptoms that had occurred in LeRoy Junior-Senior High School was not as a result of the “derailment that dumped cyanide… in LeRoy in 1970” (1). Instead, Graham specifically accuses mass hysteria for the origination of the symptoms similar to those of Tourette’s. The incident at LeRoy Junior-Senior High School provided many parallels to mass hysteria. The author claims that the victims of mass hysteria “are overwhelmingly female” (2).

Pericles and Lincoln’s Great Speeches Two very famous speeches have impacted the world with their diction and purpose. Pericles’ “Funeral Oration” and also Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address” were both spoken at a public service for those who had been killed in the war. For Pericles this speech occurred in 431 BCE at the end of the first year of the Peloponnesian War. Later in time Abraham Lincoln spoke in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania about four months after the Battle of Gettysburg. While each speech commemorated those who had died in the war, they also inspired the remaining people to continue fighting and finish the war.
There has been a lot of changes throughout New Amsterdam history. In 1609 until the year of 1664 there has been dramatic changes in history that has brought the country together in unity overtime. During this time in history many explorers had sailed across the ocean in hopes of discovering something that no one else had before. One such explorer was Henry Hudson, who went on an expedition to find a faster route to supplies that he and other people in the New Netherlands needed. Hudson made his first voyage from England in 1607 where he then tried to find a “shorter route around to Asia from Europe and through the Arctic Ocean” (History, 2009).

Staten Island did not play a major role in the American Revolution and Civil War. The area was only used as an entrance to Manhattan and Brooklyn where the troops held their forts. Then in 1898 when Staten Island made the decision to join New York City, the county eliminated their separate towns, yet was still known as Richmond County. Staten Island also went through a very large industrialization movement where the Verrazano Bridge was built. The Verrazano Bridge played an enormous role in the success of Brooklyn because Staten Island is the midpoint of Brooklyn and New Jersey.

Colonists made their living in a variety of ways: fir, lumber trading, shipping, the slave trade, and as merchants and tradesmen in the colony 's towns. Most colonists were farmers, who cleared large acres of land by hand to grow crops. Corn was the most popular,since it could be eaten by people and animals. Also grown was flax, wheat, vegetables, and tobacco. Some colonists mined for iron to send to England for manufacturing into finished goods.
