What Are The Arguments Against Student Dress Code

Imagine a teenage girl in a classroom setting who was cited with a dress code violation purely because an adult teacher had the opinion that her skirt was too short. Yet, another male student who was also breaking the dress code did not get dress coded. The decision to cite a violation for one over the other in this situation screams partiality and bias leading to the sexualization of the female student. There should be written rules and policies that teachers have to follow in order to dress code a student. Instead of just having a biased opinion and thinking a student should get a dress code violation, the written rules and policies should have everything that students can and can't wear. For example, the Raymond School Student Handbook states that “Shorts and skirts cannot reveal any undergarments or be excessively short. Also, pants cannot be worn in a way that reveals undergarments.” This evidence reveals that the length of your shorts or skirts is all based on one's biased opinion. The written rules and policies never state the length of your shorts or skirts have to be in order to receive a dress code violation. All it would take to get dress coded is a teacher to have a biased opinion on a student's skirt or shorts being too short. A method that would be more appropriate in determining the proper length for a student's shorts would be allowing an inseam of five inches or longer. Another example of opinion in a school dress code is when the UGHS Handbook states, “We expect students to come to school dressed appropriately and ready to learn.” The opinion in this piece shows that the appropriateness of one person's attire changes from teacher to teacher. One teacher could think your shorts are too short but the others might not think they are too short. All in all, student dress code policies should not be based on one's opinion. The written rules in the dress code policy should state what students can and can't
