“Fish Spine” by Santiago Nazarian is the story in the life of Hau and him getting over his insecurity’s to give a gift to his love interest. The story starts out with Hau washing his hands trying not to get the faucet or anything around him dirty with the smell of fish. Hau believes he smells of fish due to working with his parents cleaning the fish spines. Something that he doesn’t want anybody to smell when they meet him especially a girl that he likes. A girl who Hau spends a great amount of time with always wanting to be more but not having the courage due to his fear that he smells of fish.

The period of the twentieth century, specifically the nineteen-twenties, was a historically significant event in history due to the dramatic changes politically and socially. In this time period there was many altercations between two specific groups who had completely different outlooks on change. Modernists, or people who tended to be in favor of new ideas, styles and social trends, embraced the idea of change during this time period whereas traditionalist, or people who are opposed to change, had deep respect for long held cultural and religious values that they believed should not be broken under any circumstances. The Roaring Twenties led to social, political, and economic changes in the United States. The Twenties were one of the most influential time periods of the 1900’s. In the 1920’s America was battling a cultural war between traditional fundamentalists and liberal-minded urbanites. America was faced with a choice: stick with what they have always known or create a new era of change. There are several significant events that highlighted the split between the “two Americas” including Prohibition, the rise of the Ku Klux Klan, evolution and the Scopes “Monkey” trial, mass consumerism, and changing attitudes about gender roles, sex, and Women’s rights.

This is not new as my mother would lament of her apparent inability to keep the house as was depicted by June Clever played by Janine Turner in the Leave it to Beaver show. Growing up, I was shown the physical stereotype of the strong male, that is successful and with a promising career but also of the empowered woman that does it all. By the 70’s, Farrah Fawcett became the ideal with the bell bottoms, feathered hair and could portray and tough crime fighter working with other women.
Government spending in 1970 consisted of approximately 95 billion dollars in defense, 21 billion in welfare, 57 billion in education, 22 billion in healthcare, and 32 billion in pensions (US Government Spending 1970). Government spending for defense increased during the Vietnam War. However, when it concluded in the mid 1970’s, spending declined. This was a time of inflation and high unemployment. During the 1980s, the United States was situated in the middle of one of the biggest recessions since 1929. In addition to that, society was facing a great instability in politics and a growing popular in satisfaction with the leaders and economy. The years following the 1970s were marked by the bad decisions made by the former president Carter, and the people decided to elect as president Ronald Reagan. During Reagan’s years of presidency, it was adopted the politics to reduce taxes hoping to get the economy to grow again. With that said, as inventors in that period of time, we would have to be aware of the economic instability that was happening at that time.
When people look at the 1980’s, the question often times asked is, “what was even going on”. Known for its characteristically bright neons, crazy hair dos, and high school coming of age films, this decade definitely made a mark on history. Oftentimes stereotyped with these aspects, the reality of the decade was revolt against the social, financial, and political turmoil of the 1960’s and 70’s. Predating this decade, the United States of America had seen many conflicts in all aspects of life and culture. Beginning in the 1960’s, a new age of counterculture was on the rise.
The Great Recession started for the United States in December of 2007 and lasted until June of 2009. This was the worst recession in U.S. History since World War II. During this time, there was a 6.1 % loss in jobs, due the job shortages about 27 million people we either unemployed or underemployed. Known historically and internationally as the greatest economic struggle in American history, the Great Depression rendered the United States into fiscal terror. Almost seeming as a curse laid upon America, multiple major and minor events began to build upon one another and only make matters worse. This national downfall was mainly due to the crash of the stock market in 1929, the maldistribution of American wealth, the recent growth of consumerism, and the reduction of American exports around the world, with the most important cause being the international debt structure created by the aftermath of World War I. Although these two time periods greatly impacted the States, the booming 20s brought many, many technologies to America, and Americans today still use most of these innovations!
