From the 1880s and on, there was a “rapid expansion of factory production, mining, and railroad construction” (Foner 605). The expansion out west contributed to the expansion because companies were no longer limited to working either in the south or the New England area, and “a working free labor system” (Foner 571) established by the Freedman’s Bureau, an agency created during Reconstruction. The period of the twentieth century, specifically the nineteen-twenties, was a historically significant event in history due to the dramatic changes politically and socially. In this time period there was many altercations between two specific groups who had completely different outlooks on change. Modernists, or people who tended to be in favor of new ideas, styles and social trends, embraced the idea of change during this time period whereas traditionalist, or people who are opposed to change, had deep respect for long held cultural and religious values that they believed should not be broken under any circumstances. The Roaring Twenties led to social, political, and economic changes in the United States. The Twenties were one of the most influential time periods of the 1900’s. In the 1920’s America was battling a cultural war between traditional fundamentalists and liberal-minded urbanites. America was faced with a choice: stick with what they have always known or create a new era of change. There are several significant events that highlighted the split between the “two Americas” including Prohibition, the rise of the Ku Klux Klan, evolution and the Scopes “Monkey” trial, mass consumerism, and changing attitudes about gender roles, sex, and Women’s rights.
From the earliest age, you are bombard with what is perceived to be the famine or masculine ideal from commercials, movies but also its learned from the type of family unit you are most in contact with. This is not new as my mother would lament of her apparent inability to keep the house as was depicted by June Clever played by Janine Turner in the Leave it to Beaver show. Growing up, I was shown the physical stereotype of the strong male, that is successful and with a promising career but also of the empowered woman that does it all. By the 70’s, Farrah Fawcett became the ideal with the bell bottoms, feathered hair and could portray and tough crime fighter working with other women.
