Introduction In medical research on human subjects, considerations related to the well-being of the human subject should take precedence over the interests of science and society. The primary purpose of research involving human subjects is to improve preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and the understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of disease. Even with proven therapeutic effects, methods must always be challenged through research for their effectiveness, efficiency, and quality. This upholds medical research to ethical standards which promotes protections for subjects and their health and rights. Investigators should always be aware of and up to date on the ethical, legal and regulatory requirements for research on human subjects in China as well as applicable international requirements.
