In the Hound of the Baskervilles by sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Doyle developed the theme that appearances are deceiving. This novel set in the 1890’s is about the family curse of the Baskervilles. The main place of the book is the moor which is the place where everything went down. Sir Charles had dies there one mysterious night, and now Dr.Watson and holmes are on a mission to find out who killed Sir Charles and what exactly happened that night. In the Hound Of the Baskervilles by sir Arthur Conan Doyle appearances can bring deception through lies, innocence, and manipulation.
First, the book shows appearances can be deceiving through lies that have broken hearts
. In the text it says “I am giving you some information now, in return for all that you have given me. The lady who passed here as Mrs.Stapleton in reality is his wife.” (178) This means both Sir Henry and Laura Lyons have been lied to. Sir Henry was falling in love with “Stapleton's sister”, but it was actually his wife. Laura Lyons thought that Stapleton was single, but after they proved to Laura Lyons that he was not, she had a different take on him. This means they both had fallen in love with already married people, but they did not know because Stapleton was lying about his wife being his sister.

Barrymore's brother, and Mr. and Mrs. Barrymore have been helping him survive out on the moor. Mrs. Barrymore says “My unhappy brother is starving on the moor” (130) After hearing this Sir Henry and Watson were tremendously in shock. They could not believe that the signals Barrymore had been sending out were to the escaped convict. They both also would have never expected the escaped convict to be Mrs.Barrymore's brother because Mrs. Barrymore is such a loyal, trustworthy, and innocent woman. Mrs. Barrymore then asked for them not to do any harm to her brother and they agreed not
