One of the major milestones was the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence was a document mainly written by John Adams that said that the Thirteen American colonies were no longer under British rule. This was a milestone because the US was no longer under British rule and could now be formed into its own independent country. “On June 11, 1776 the Continental Congress appointed five leaders, called the Committee of Five, to write a document explaining why they were declaring their independence. The thirteen colonies in the America's had been at war with Britain for around a year when the Second Continental Congress decided it was time for the colonies to officially declare their independence. This meant that they were breaking away from British rule. They would no longer be a part of the British Empire and would fight for their freedom”. The Battle of Cowpens was fought on January 17, 1781 and was between American Colonial forces under Brigadier General Daniel Morgan and British forces under Sir Banastre Tarleton. “The Battle of Cowpens took place on January 17, 1781 in the hills just north of the town of Cowpens, South Carolina. The Battle of Cowpens was the turning point of the Revolutionary War in the southern colonies. After losing several battles in the South, the Continental Army defeated the British in a decisive victory at Cowpens. The victory forced the British army to retreat and gave the Americans confidence that they could win the war.” (Ducksters) This is saying that The Battle of Cowpens was on the 17th of January in 1781 and took place in Cowpens, South Carolina and was the turning point of the Revolutionary War. Another battle during the Revolutionary War was the Battle of Yorktown. The Battle of Yorktown was the last great battle of the Revolutionary War. “It is where the British Army surrendered and the British government began to consider a peace treaty. The British Army was now surrounded at Yorktown. They were greatly outnumbered by the French and American troops. For eleven days the American forces bombarded the British.
