Regret has long motivated people to learn from their mistakes, as the Fullmetal Alchemist shows. In the manga Fullmetal Alchemist Volumes 1-3 by Hiromu Arakawa, a Japanese manga artist, a state alchemist named Edward Elric and his brother Alphonse Elric face a hard enduring journey trying to get their original bodies back from a previous experience that did not go as well as they were hoping. Edward and Alphonse struggle with the outcome of losing bits and pieces of their bodies when they experiment human transmutation on their mother. The only way they can possibly return to their original lives and bodies is if they can find the philosopher's stone, which has the ability to return their bodies back to the normal state. Ed clarifies to Al after the transmutation happens that, “We were the ones...who made the mistake…” Ed realizes that making this mistake will affect their lives due to the consequences they have to face from attempting human transmutation. Edward takes the blame for both of them because he is older than Al and should know better than to put the two of them through a situation like he has. Throughout this panel in the manga, Edward is the dominant character and the speech bubbles are in black to show that what he is saying was in the past. Edward’s left eye is enlarged to demonstrate his shocked emotion toward the transmutation not working. His hand has blood dripping from it to address that all of his work during the transmutation was for nothing because he had failed to reconstruct his mother for the final process and he had lost his left leg, while Alphonse’s whole body had disappeared. The thoughts that he has from his past haunts him because he knows he has jumbled his and his brother’s lives and needs to keep searching for the stone in order to fix it. Later on Edwards explains to Alphonse, “All I could get for one arm was your soul...” Ed realizes he did everything he could at the time to get back the majority of his brother, but from this mistake he can not live with seeing Alphonse stuck in a suit of armor. Ed does not have anything or anyone left, so he uses his regret to achieve his goal in getting his brother’s normal body back so he does not feel alone any
