In the novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, the society of the boys goes from moments of incivility to all-out inhumanity because of the power shifting to the one on the island. The boys have been on the island for a long period of time, causing them to lose innocence, and can’t control their behavior. Over time the positive human qualities that they had before turned into savage and murderous traits the boys gained after a long period of time on the evil island. As time goes on, the boys' society goes from moments of incivility to all-out-inhumanity due to power shifting to the one on the island. Ralph is the chief of the island and ensures all the boys are in check and following rules. Everyone else wants to agree on what to do and needs a plan. Jack states,¨We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything¨(42). This shows that Ralph isn't the only one who wants order on the island, but needs rules to keep civilization. But as we go on we see that Jack starts to think that Ralph's rules are wrong and that everyone is not obeying the rules, and he wants to start his own leadership. Jack states,” I’m not going to play any longer, not with you, I'm not going to be a part of ralphs lot-”(127). This is all due to jacks leadership and how his savage traits impacted the other boys' part of his tribe. When the boys continue to hunt they start to see the obsession they get from hunting and the power they feel from it. But the boy's behavior becomes even more inhuman when they turn on each other. They do this when they accidentally kill Simon. It states,” The beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over its face, it was crying out against the abominable noise”(152). This shows that the boys have killed Simon and are very inhuman. Simon was killed by the uncivil acts of the boys and the inhuman traits they gained from hunting and being on the island. Another thing that shows their inhumanity is when they killed Piggy. When Piggy is trying to reason with the boys that their society becomes uncivil he was instead killed by one of the boys. "The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist”(181).
