It seems that governments in the United States are having difficulties meeting the needs of the people with the current resources allotted to them. Government has the task of disturbing revenues to programs that act in the public interest. At times, programs, such as education, are underfunded. A decline in literacy, an inability to recruit qualified college graduates for teaching positions, unequal access to educational resources, stagnant compensation for teachers, and many more issues all play a part in the decline of public education (Edsall 1). However, one of the biggest and worsening problems within the education system is the sharp decline of qualified people to fill teaching positions. Researchers have found that there are at least 36,000 vacant teaching positions and at least 163,000 teaching positions that are being filled by underqualified teachers (Edsall 2). Schools are continuing to adopt harder academic standards, and the teachers are left scrambling to try and make their own curriculum with little to no helpful resources on hand (Will 1). One of the biggest reasons why there are fewer and fewer teachers in the education field is the lack of adequate pay for their important jobs and responsibilities (Toch 2).
In 1980’s some Massachusetts business leaders became convinced that the state's education systems needed an overhaul. These business leaders have evidence to believe that their school lack of clear goals, performance targets and metric systems to measure progress. In recent years, the United States has fallen behind in their education. In 2014, Finland had one of the top five educational systems in the world while the United States was only considered as “average” (Lepi). Introduction The cost of college tuition in the United States has been skyrocketing for decades, making higher education unaffordable for many families across the country. This issue not only affects the immediate financial stability of students and their families, but also has far-reaching consequences for the economy and the government. With more and more people struggling to afford college, we are seeing a decline in the number of students enrolling in higher education and a decrease in the number of skilled workers entering the job market. As such, it is essential that we find solutions to make higher education more accessible and affordable for everyone.
Over the past three decades, average tuition and fees at a public four-year educational institutions have increased by a staggering 231 percent meanwhile the average family income grew only 16 percent. This makes it difficult for families to offer support for post secondary education, thus making students rely on financial aid. ED provides support through Title IV programs, in the form of loans and grants. The 2015 fiscal year budget concentrates on financial aid for students in postsecondary education, special education as well as high-poverty schools while raising the budget 2% to the previous year. Unfortunately this still causes a threat to the industry if tuitions continue to rise.
To no one’s surprise, most Americans are aware that education is a necessity in life. Even though America offers some of the best education in the world, many do not realize the impact that social class has on one’s education. Whereas most other nations fund their schools equally, America spends much more on the more affluent districts.
The education policy in the United States
Educational reform became a priority and national education goals were established. The reform increased accountability and the manner in which students and education authorities were assessed. Recent shifts in educational accountability has forced state and local education authorities to reform the instruction, assessment and perspective in which we educate all students in order to ensure students are prepared for college or career. This accountability would also remedy the poor economic and education standing of the United States of recent years and allow students to out-compete any worker in the world as outlined in President Obama’s Race to the Top initiative.
