In our century, technology, especially video games, are considered by many to be unacceptable and defective for our health. There are countless articles on the web about the subject proving whether video games are acceptable or not. Despite the fact that games have negative effects on human brain and behavior they also have positive effects such as improving creativity, precision, motivation along with other abilities due to the fact that in general video games have implemented complex learning systems that can form a better understanding of certain objectives causing the brain to receive great amounts of information with ease. In an article from Idunn.no, James Paul Gee says that, “ Video game technologies hold out great promise, beyond entertainment, for building new learning systems for serious purposes in and out of school. ” what he tries to claim is that video games are complex technologies that can change the way each individual receive information. Besides the fact that video games are complex, they come in a large variety of categories an aspect which makes them effective in a wide set of areas. Video games can be played to solve different problems, an activity which makes your brain examine the surrounding environment to find the perfect solution for accessing the next level/chapter of the game, a process that increases the brain activity in problem solving situations in and outside of the game. Steven Johnson says in his book, “Everything Bad Is Good for You: How Today’s Popular Culture Is Actually Making Us Smarter” that “The sky is not falling. In many ways, the weather has never been better. It just takes a new kind of barometer to tell the difference.” People have their mind bonded on the fact that video games are unacceptable, many see only the dark side of this kind of technology, just a few could see the bright side where video games do not damage us but teaches us in a way that school does not. Learning through this technology is entertaining and relaxing. Game learning systems teaches us through example, furthermore they make us learn great amount of information while the brain is relaxed. It is true that not all games are beneficial but everything has a good and a bad side, however, it all resumes to what James Paul Gee says in his book “Are Video Games Good For Learning?”, “It all depends on how they are used and what sorts of wider learning system activities and relationships they are embedded with.” therefore video games that could be implemented in schools must have great learning systems, big amounts of activities and complex but entertaining problems that must be solved.
