In the book, Black Rednecks and White Liberals Thomas Sowell argues that the Black Ghetto culture is not an authentic black culture as many people believe. It is in fact a culture that has be passed on by white southern rednecks. This culture originated centuries ago from the parts of the British Isles that white southern people came from. Amongst these radical leaders are Malcolm X, Robert Williams, and the Black Panthers. The Black Panthers, a group created by in 1966, by Huey P Newton and Bobby Seale protected black communities patrolling areas with loaded firearms, monitoring police activities involving blacks. Since they were known for carrying loaded firearms FBI Director J Edgar Hoover considered the Black Panthers “the greatest threat to the internal security of the United States” (To Determine the Destiny of Our Black Community). The Black Panthers Movement was very effective in helping empower the black community but lacked large scale assurance due to the fact that the FBI thought of this movement as a terrorist organization. This social movement has been very effective in addressing the social problem or racism and police brutality. It did show how the police would act when they don’t believe in an organization. They discriminate and try to run the organization down and out. If the police or FBI want a stop to things, they will do whatever is possible to end it, including illegal behavior.

The Black Panther Party The Black Panther Party was founded in October 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, California. This party was initially established for black nationalism and to guard African American communities against acts of police brutality. The Black Panther Party was seen as militants and a group of people who sought war with the police. They were also seen as the “single greatest threat to national security” by the F.B.I.
The Black Panthers began standing up for themselves and other blacks around the United States. Police had already been abusing their powers and authority, Black Panther members became educated on the law and challenged the police. The original members of the Black Panther Party Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, and Bobby Hutton decided to police the police force. They would voluntarily “antagonize” the police into a situation, to challenge the legitimacy of the polices actions and power. They would abide by all the laws hoping the police would still do something to them “illegally”, for the public to see or to use self-defense against the police.
Black women are treated less than because of their ascribed traits, their gender and race, and are often dehumanized and belittled throughout the movie. They are treated like slaves and are seen as easily disposable. There are several moments throughout the film that show the racial, gender, and class inequalities. These moments also show exploitation and opportunity hoarding. The Help also explains historical context of the inequality that occurred during that time period.
The chapter of Denial highlights and show us the experience of black women trying hard to change themselves to fit in with the society. The use of the techniques of mise-en-scene in the visual film provide the audience with with the reality in which black women are safe and comfortable. Black women should be fearless and learn to make decisions for themselves without the influence of the society and what the media says about them.
