Ancient China was a great and powerful civilization, ruled by many fascinating dynasties. Two dynasties, the Han and the Song, were particularly interesting. During the Period of Prosperity, these two dynasties had a lot in common, but also had many differences. One similarity between the Han and the Song were their increase in trading. The Han used the military to protect their trade routes, so people felt safe and travelled further and more frequently.
The three aspects that were most molded in these centuries were religion, technology and, in turn, society. Religion in China was constantly changing and blending during the Sui, Tang, and Song dynasty. Buddhist influence and Confucian knowledge made up the government's ideologies during the Sui/Tang Era, later Daoist and Confucian rivals rethought Buddhist philosophy and allowed for the rebirth of old traditions with modern aspects and innovation. Technology during these eras were constantly in motion the Tang dynasty mostly left ideas that the Song dynasty perfected over time.
Society was a huge part of the Roman Empire and Han China. They both have similarities and differences when it comes to their societies. The clothing, social classes, and the role of women are very different but are similar in some ways. In the Roman Empire and Han China, the clothing was important to society.
Han was different from Qin because the poor could be able to rise up in the economy when in the Qin Dynasty couldn’t. And the only thing that was driving was the trade and economy system. Another thing that changed was the government was able to rule a state instead of a person. Also, there was prized education for people!
China, up until the Qin Dynasty, consisted of independent states controlled by kings fighting each other for land and power. This time period was called The Era of Warring States, which lasted two hundred years. After this time, the Qin Dynasty rose to power. They conquered all other dynasties, and established a centralized government, unifying China for the first time. The dynasty that succeeded the Qin, the Han, continued the centralized government and they started a westward expansion that would encourage trade and cultural diffusion.
Throughout China’s long history, there have been eleven imperial dynasties that all affected China and the rest of the world in some way. However, one dynasty in particular had the most impact on both China and the world as a whole: the Song Dynasty. Part of China’s Golden Age, the Song Dynasty lasted nearly 320 years from 960-1279. The Song Dynasty helped unify China as it brought together the small states that came from the collapse of the preceding Tang Dynasty. During the Song Dynasty, China saw great technological advancement that also benefitted the entire world.
Although they follow the same beliefs of Confucianism, they have many differences in their period of prosperity. First, let’s talk about the Song dynasty. The amount of new and add-on inventions the Song dynasty had created was amazing. For example, they invented, glow in the dark paint, fireworks, grenades, gunpowder, and ideas about how to prevent diseases. The invention of the gunpowder actually gave the Song Dynasty an advantage because they were able to use cannons, flamethrowers, landmines, and grenades.
The Qin dynasty succeeded the Warring States Period (475 BCE - 221) (Britannica, Warring States, 2014, 2018), and the Spring and Autumn Period (770–476 BC) (Britannica, Spring and Autumn Period, 2017, 2018). During the Warring States and Spring and Autumn Periods, there was a massive power vacuum and several different states were locked in a struggle for control over China. The most prominent state during the Warring States Period was the Qin state, they revised the governing methods of the once influential state of Zhou. They made changes to land distribution, power distribution, education of the common folk, trade, and units of measurement throughout China. The changes made by Qin Shi Huang are what made him successfully unify China.
When Japan attacked Korea, Ming assisted Korea and defended the nation. Yuan, Ming, Goryeo, and Joseon all impacted one another. Yuan influenced Goryeo through fashion. Goryeo then gave Yuan traditional Tang Song fashion styles. These mixed and matched until Ming, when Aoqun became popular, and influenced Joseon.
In life, there are all different kinds of sacrifices being made by people, whether it be big and life changing or small and not so affecting. As Mitch Albom said, “Sacrifice is a part of life. It’s supposed to be. It’s not something to regret. It's something to aspire to.”
This division produced political maturity within the regions of East Asia. In 589, the Sui dynasty was established; this dynasty's goal was to reunite China with the other regions. As a result, the Chinese were then able to trade with other regions which made them become a successful model later on. After achieving a long history of success, China’s cultural methods greatly influenced Japan, Korea, and also acted as a good example for many other countries in the world. China influenced Japan and Korea through religion, art, government, architecture, and much more.
