As a member of the Populist Party, I would have identified with their platform of agrarian reform, economic populism, and social justice. I would have supported their calls for government intervention to address issues such as monopolistic practices, unfair banking policies, and the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few. Additionally, I would have been attracted to the Populist Party's emphasis on grassroots organizing, direct democracy, and the empowerment of ordinary citizens. Their advocacy for initiatives such as the direct election of senators and the use of initiatives and referendums to bypass entrenched political interests resonated with my belief in participatory democracy. While the Democratic and Republican parties each had their constituencies and platforms during this period, the Populist Party's focus on addressing the needs and concerns of farmers, workers, and ordinary citizens aligned most closely with my values and priorities.
Throughout history, there have been some astonishing fights for the rights of the people. In the 1800s and early 1900s, two groups made their own push against the government. Starting in the 1800s the Populist group was formed. They were better known as the “Famer Alliance”, because of their mindset to help the farmers and the lower-class people. In the early 1900s, another group was formed, and they were known as Progressives.
We may be a nation of populists, but we are not a populist nation. The populism that Jefferson championed throughout his life ended in catastrophe – as America has matured, we have moved almost entirely away from his principles. In many ways, the composition of the United States government is itself a check on its people. The people, of course, are responsible for its composition, but not its laws. Adams and Madison knew the dangers of populism could erode liberty and ultimately placed these fundamental barriers upon the people to limit the power of populism and to maintain the Constitution.
In everyday conversations a subject that frequently tends to arise is American politics. During these conversations a variation of sub topics often occur usually pertaining to the Army’s funding, elections, and the different political parties. One of these topics that tends to cause a lot of feuding is the different political parties. In my family alone, we partake in disputes based on our different political parties, I am a Democrat while my parents are Republican. Often, we participate in quarrels over different events that occur in society.
The United States overall during the progressive era, Gilded age, and WWI moved farther away from realizing its ideals due to various developments made regarding foreign policy and domestic issues. Progressive leaders in the US include President Teddy Roosevelt, President William Howard Taft, and President Woodrow Willson. The main objective of progressives was to rid the government of corruption. A Fierce Discontent by Yale alumni Indiana University historian and Michael McGerr documents this change that spread throughout America, which is known as the Progressive Movement. According to Foa and Mounk (2006), the democratic disconnect is caused by fall of trust in major institutions such as the presidency and the Congress. The media is highly ranked among sectors that lack trust. Most citizens approve army ruling which expresses the belief among most Americans that it is impossible to live in a democratic republic. The government is the major stakeholder because of its wider skepticism towards liberal institutions. The citizens have opened to strict interpretations because the establishment of other political parties does increasingly not affect their lives (Foa &Mounk 2016, p.7).
The Paramount decision and Hollywood blacklist altered the direction of the filmmaking business in the United States. Hollywood was left very damaged and some of the most talented in the business found themselves without a career. The Hollywood blacklist targeted various individuals in the film industry including producers, actors, screenwriters, directors, musicians, and other professionals. Because of their suspected political beliefs or associations, these individuals were not allowed to be employed in the film industry.
Parliamentarism, or a parliamentary government, is defined “as a system of government in which the executive, the government, is chosen by and is responsible to…the legislature.” (Gerring, Thacker and Moreno, 2005, p. 15) With this form of governmental control, many advantages and disadvantages arise, especially when this system is compared to the likes of ‘Presidential systems’ or even that of ‘Semi-presidential systems’. However, my aim within this essay is to, both, highlight to advantages of parliamentarism, and to also give my opinion as to why this system is better when compared and contrasted with the aforementioned systems.
