Morris Bird III is an incredible nine year old boy. “When the day was finished, two things happened to the boy. First, and most important, he had accomplished---in seeing his old buddy Stanley Chaloupka—what he had set out to do. Second, he had behaved in such a way that the legless man had called him, for whatever it was worth, the greatest thing since sliced bread.” (Robertson, p.2) Throughout the course of the book many people realize the many qualities that compose the ever great Morris. Although there are three main and most remarkable qualities that stand out. Morris possesses the courage, responsibility, and determination it takes to get through difficult challenges. He is a kind and loving older brother to Sandra. Even though occasionally she tries to take control of the situation, he consistently ends up getting her to listen and do the right thing. After the explosion, Morris shows responsibility for more than just Sandra and himself. He takes on the responsibility of the burned lady and the legless man. Being responsible doesn’t only mean to make helpful decisions, but to act quickly and take care of others. Morris does just that with a jar of peanut butter that was meant for a snack but turned into something much bigger. “Morris Bird III struggled with the Peter Pan Peanut Butter jar top. If he ever got it loose, he might be able to help Sandra. Sometime ago he’d burned his hand on a radiator, and his grandmother had rubbed butter on it. The butter had made most of the sting go away. He didn’t know whether peanut butter had the same effect, but he didn’t think he had much to lose if he gave it a try.”(p. 170) with the smearing of the peanut butter it soothed both Sandra and Morris and made it possible for them to continue. While carrying the burned lady they come across the legless man who needs a ride. Morris makes the responsible choice to help the man.
