During the early 20th century, the world was caught in a great political and social upheaval with the establishment of communism and fascism in Europe. This new ideology, coupled with the start of the Second World War, sent the world in distress. George Orwell an Aldous Huxley both began to create different worlds in their respective books, 1984 and Brave New World, which embodied their vision of what a future society might look like after the conclusion of the war. Key to both of these new societies is the development of advanced technologies that can be used to control the population, brainwash the children, demonstrate power, and manipulate the past. Brave New World incorporates its children and technology in a direct way by creating specific technology that is used to control their totalitarian society. It is not necessary to control children from before they were born, but it is a large part of their society on account of how their caste system is based on genetic differences. In comparison 1984 uses its technology in a passive way by giving it to their children to use to spy for the Party which is a key part of most governments. The development of this kind of spy technology for their child spies is fundamental to any totalitarian society because it shows how well the Party can brain wash its population into believing everything it says. In Brave New World, most of their power is used in the early stages of development to brainwash children into being the people their society needs. While in 1984, the Party shows its power through fear, like fear of the Thought Police. This basis of fear is more in the mid to later stages in life, where people begin to start thinking on their own. Both ways seam to work, but they require massive amounts of resources and technology to accomplish these tasks.
