The characters in Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451 are both rebels against their societies, which makes them very similar but also very different. The protagonists have difficulty seeing beyond their own perspectives and understanding others. Both stories take place in a dystopian future in which the majority of people live in a controlled environment. People in Brave New World are genetically engineered to be happy with little privacy or individuality, whereas people in Fahrenheit 451 are constantly afraid of firemen who burn books. In both stories, the main character is an individual who wants to break free from their circumstances. In Brave New World, this character is Bernard Marx, who falls in love with Lenina Huxley before she becomes pregnant with John's child (Brave New World). Meanwhile, Montag rebels against society by reading books that teach him how to read (451). Both of them are men who have been raised in a society where knowledge is forbidden, and both of them are trying to learn about their world despite being denied access to it. In addition to being similar in this way, they also share some other characteristics: they both have dark hair, they both wear glasses, and they both live near the beach. Mildred is another character who shares similarities with John Savage. Like him, she was raised in a society that prohibited knowledge; although she was not raised by Bernard Marx like John Savage, she did not have access to books or toys either.
