You can't be talking about gothic stories with a friend and not think of “House Taken Over” and “The fall of the House of Usher”. Both of these stories have very scary settings with both having very tense moments in the stories. In both of these stories, the house ends up being abducted by spirits. In my essay, there will be explanations for everything that happened in the stories to make fear happen in the characters. If you're gonna be reading a gothic book you are going to be thinking about the dark and scary. Well, there is a big fear factor in the story for example when the unknown man first shows up at the house there was a good amount of fear in him seeing the big crack in the wall and the dark and gothic vibe going on he got a little scared of what was about to happen. Another perspective of fear factor in the story is while the unknown guy was in Usher's room he saw a quick glimpse of a ghost-looking object in the hallway. The unknown man ran out into the hallway to see it was Usher's sister but once she opened the door to her bedroom she somehow disappeared and Usher never saw her again. In conclusion, Usher was a little frightened that there was a ghost moving around in the home that he would have no idea what was going on. Usher's love for his beloved sister was out of this world ever since Usher and his twin sister Madeline were born. They have been best friends spending every moment together. They could be playing board games, reading books, painting, playing instruments, or even just running around. They have always been super close. Usher was starting to get fear that his sister would pass away soon and he would be left hopeless and lonely and he couldn't think of it without getting sad. “Her death”, he said with a bitterness which I can never forget, would leave him hopeless and frail.” (Poe 19). The quote goes to prove that the death of Usher's sister would be super hard on him, almost unbearable.
