The Many quests of Jason and the Argonauts
The story of Jason and the Argonauts is a famous story. It has been retold in many different ways. There's the myth of Jason and the Argonauts as well as the film Jason and the Argonauts (1963). In both Jason is a brave hero who was willing to do things that one else could. He would push the limits, and brave quests that others could only imagine doing. Jason was met with many challenges and trials and proved himself worthy to be a hero. Some of the journeys Jason and the Argonauts went on are the Clashing Rocks, The Harpies, and retrieving the Golden Fleece.

In both, the Harpies are winged, vicious, clawed creatures who were sent to Phineus as a punishment from Zeus. The punishment that these Harpies were meant to deliver was the destruction of any meal that Phineus attempted to eat. The reasoning behind Zeus’s punishment was that he felt displeased with Phineus’s prophecies. In the myth, whenever the the Harpies came to torture Phineus they would leave behind the most appalling scent, that would sicken any live creature. (120). Phineus was told in a prophecy that the only people that could help him destroy the Harpies were the brothers of boreas, the great north wind. (120). Upon the arrival of Jason and his crew, the brothers of Boreas attempted to slay the harpies with their swords. The brothers would have been successful in their mission if it weren't for Iris the rainbow messenger. Iris told the brothers that it was forbidden to kill the Harpies, but she took an oath that they would no longer bother Phineus. (122). In the movie, the Harpies not only destroy Phineus’s food, they eat it. Also, when the Harpies come on their regular visit to demolish Phineus’s food they also harass him. Any attempt that Phineus makes to defend himself or his food is met with claw and beak attacks. When Jason's crew arrived, all hands were on deck to defeat the Harpies. The Golden Fleece was a treasure sought after by many. It was located in the city of Colchis beyond the Clashing Rocks. It was said to be impossible to reach, and could only be obtained by the gods. Jason desired the Golden Fleece because it was his token to claim lolcos from King Pelias. In the myth, Hera see’s the danger Jason and his crew are in as they arrive at Colchis and she seeks the help of Aphrodite. Hera and Aphrodite make a plan to make Medea, (the daughter of the king) fall in love with Jason using the help of Cupid. Once Jason finally gets to meet with King Aetas and ask for the Golden Fleece, he offers his services in exchange. King AEetes was not thrilled, but offered Jason a deal. If Jason could complete a trial of courage successfully then he could receive the Golden Fleece. The trial was impossible. No man could complete the challenge without dying first. But because Medea was in love with Jason she used her magic to make him safe, and indestructible. Jason was then able to complete the trial and then later received the Golden Fleece.
