“It's a lovely fucking war. Bravo Six out” The differences and similarities between Mary Ann Bell and Bunny There are some very unique connections between Oliver Stone's film Platoon and Tim O'Brien's book The Things They Carried. For one both Stone and O'Brien served in the Vietnam War. Another instance is the type of environment that veterans of the Vietnam War fought in. A much bigger comparison is with Mary Ann Bell of The Things They Carried and Bunny from Platoon. Both find war as almost a free-for-all fest that they are capable of having a little fun in. The necklace of tongues worn by Bell, for example, in contrast with the funny-looking furry tail attached to Bunny’s helmet, therefore shows the enthusiasm they both had for combat. …show more content…
This is because Bell was thrust quickly into the position of a medic when she came to Vietnam where O'Brien states that “Mary Anne wasn't afraid to get her hands bloody. At times, she seemed fascinated by it. Not the gore so much, but the adrenaline buzz that went with the job, that quick hot rush in your veins” (63). Bunny was the same just like this in fact as even brought up in the first paragraph, he was not afraid of Gore or blood and seemed almost fascinated by it when using the butt of his rifle to hit the Vietnam villager. Both of them know that they are at war so to cope with it they start acting like they are doing stuff that they may not want to do but seems reasonable during combat. When speaking of their trying to cope with combat, one knot must forget that they were once humans in society. especially in the case of Bell to see when O'Brien states that “Mary Anne Bell and Mark Fossie had been sweethearts since grammar school. From the sixth grade on they had known for a fact that someday they would be married, and live in a fine gingerbread house near Lake Erie” (60). Even as awkward as Bunny may be, one still must remember that he was once a person in society. What is not known for certain is what his occupation was or even where he was living in life but taking a guess one would assume that he was either poor or dropped out of high school or …show more content…
This is because by the end of The Things They Carried Bell has changed almost for the good and seems that she won't go back to her old ways but instead insist on going with Green Berets on hard combat missions that may lead to death or even the killing of Innocence. Bunny, as it may be seen as rare, starts to feel that he is somewhat lost to truly is. Bunny himself states that “You know, Junior, some of the things we did, man... I don't feel like we did something wrong. But sometimes, man, I get this bad feeling. I told the Padre the truth, man. I like it here. You get to do what you want. Nobody fucks with you.” Hair Bunny is messing with his conscience and is trying to understand if he was right in some instances or wrong in some instances talking to Private Junior. The direct opposite is seen with the bell when she says at the end that “I'm here, I might as well learn something” (60). Bell directly changes from the one loving sweet girl that was used to boost the morale of the soldiers Into a cold killing machine that will do anything in combat It should also be said that both characters seem as if they have short tempers. they want to get the job done immediately and will not stand for anything in their
