Despite their fundamental similarities, softball and baseball have significant differences in almost every facet of the game. This includes differences in field dimensions, bats, balls, and game mechanics. The most noticeable difference between the softball and baseball is obvious when you compare the players. Females almost exclusively play softball while males play baseball, with few exceptions. This is done for multiple reasons, and there is a massive debate over whether this should remain the same. Perhaps the second most notable difference is the balls each sport uses. Baseballs are between 2.86 and 2.94 inches in diameter and weigh between 5 and 5.25 ounces. Alternatively, softballs are much larger, with a diameter of 3.8 inches and a weight between 6.25 and 7 ounces. …show more content…
They have very similar layouts and use the same bases, the only differences being the distance between objects on the field and the lack of a pitching mound and grass infield in softball. For example, The Kansas City Royals, a major league baseball team, play on a fairly standard baseball field. There is 90 feet between each base, and the pitcher is 60 feet 6 inches away from home plate. The pitcher pitches off of a piece of rubber that is on a mound elevated 10 inches above the rest of the playing field. Alternatively, on a softball field, the distance between bases is only 60 feet, the pitcher is 43 feet away from home plate, and has a rubber but no mound. These dimensions, combined with the type of ball each sport uses, results in batters having roughly the same amount of time to react to the ball (at the professional level). Softballs do not travel as fast as baseballs because of their size, but the shortened distance makes hitting a softball just as hard as hitting a
