The short stories “The Cask of Amontillado'' by Edgar Allen Poe and “Hills like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway begin with many similar ideas, but throughout the story we see how the authors set in motion different concepts. In “The Cask of Amontillado'' we know it takes place on a cool early spring night. On the other hand the story “Hills Like White Elephants” begins in a warm and sunny countryside. Throughout both stories readers are constantly reminded of the difference in settings. These works can also be seen as similar due to the fact of how death plays an important role in the plot lines. In both of these stories it is easy to see how the use of persuasion plays a major role in how the characters speak to others. Throughout both stories it is clear to see they share the same ideas about ending lives, but what makes them vastly unassociated is how they end. While none of them are particularly happy they both end very differently. In this passage “For half a century now no human hand has touched them. May he rest in peace!” (Poe 5) from “The Cask of Amontillado” it is easy to understand that a death did in fact occur. On the other hand this quote, “Would you do something for me now?" "I'd do anything for you. "Would you please please please please please please please stop talking?"( Hemingway 4) from the story “Hills like white Elephants” leaves the reader confused on what happens. They never finished their discussion, leaving the readers confused about if the couple keeps the baby and starts a family. Or do they split up and begin living their own separate lives. It can become very confusing trying to understand what happens in between their relationship. The ending of “Hills like white Elephants” does not leave anything clear to the readers on the other hand while in “The Cask of Amontillado” it is easy for readers to understand what happens at the very end of the …show more content…

In "The Cask of Amontillado” after reading the line that says, “I must not suffer as a result of taking my revenge” (Poe 1) reader's question if the murder will even actually happen. This leaves the overall mood confusing to the audience because they will never know what to expect Montresor actions to be. If he will follow through with his plans or not. On the other hand this quote “I know you wouldn't mind it, Jig. It's really not anything” (Hemingway 2) from “Hills like White Elephants” leaves readers feeling certain on what will happen next. They feel with how confident the man is speaking at that
