IR #2 Innocent people are being picked out and are ending up dead. It can not be a coincidence that these victims are black. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee a black man named Tom is accused of raping a white woman. He is found guilty and ends up being killed. In The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas two sixteen-year old kids are on their way home from a party in the “hood” and are pulled over by a cop. Starr and her friend Kahlil have done nothing wrong but Kahlil ends up shot dead. Starr and the cop are the only people who really know what happened that night and everyone in the nation are dying to know the real story. To Kill a Mockingbird and The Hate you Give both have a common event because an innocent black person has assumptions made about them, and both people are killed. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a man is put in prison because he is black. In the story The Hate you Give, Kahlil is killed because he is black. The officer that kills Kahlil claims he saw a gun but is wrong when they figure out that it is only a hair brush. The news also makes Kahlil out to be a monster when they lie about what really happened the night of the shooting. “He said the kid and his friend immediately started cursing him out—, We never cursed. “And they kept glancing at each other like they were up to something. Brian says that’s when he got scared, ‘cause they could have taken him down if they teamed up” (Thomas 246). The night of the murder they never cursed out the police officer. They did everything he asked them to do. The only reason people are believing this officer is because he is white and Khalil is black. People also believed that Tom Robinson was a rapist because he is black even though the evidence showed that he did not commit the
