What Are The Similarities Between The Lottery And The Hunger Games

In the short story, “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and the movie, “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins, tells a tale of dystopian communities where they have to choose a sacrifice by drawing their names and having them to kill to survive to make sure they have enough food for their communities.Even though both stories are violent and cruel, they both explain the purpose of a dystopian life. First, some similarities between both stories, “The Lottery” and “The Hunger Games” are that they are both in a rural community and that their children are involved with this yearly event too. There is no excuse for little kids either. If their name gets picked they must participate. Every year they both have to do this so they can control the population and supplies. No one likes this event but there is no other choice. On the other hand, there are some differences between the two stories as well. The kids in “The Lottery” were happy and excited to collect the rocks that were meant for killing someone while in “The Hunger Games”, none of the kids were happy or joyful. They were all scared. Another difference would be that in “The Lottery”, they had no sponsors and in “The Hunger Games”, they had sponsors so that people would like them and bet on them. One other difference would be that in “The Lottery”, they only had to kill one person to sacrifice and in “The Hunger Games”, only one could survive and they would have to kill the other 11 districts (23 tributes). In conclusion, “The Lottery” and “The Hunger Games” both explain how a dystopian community is not fair and cruel but they both show what it would be like to have to do these events.
