Characters are essential to understanding the story and are effective when they are developed to connect with the audience. To effectively depict stereotypes found in high school in episode one of the 1990s TV series, “Freaks and Geeks” media and filming techniques are used. First of all, the introduction of the episode has soundtracks to show different cliques. Specifically, as the camera pans the field and focuses on the three main groups in high school, the music changes. When the freaks are introduced, rock music plays which becomes louder as the camera distances itself from them. Then the camera focuses on the geeks during which the music turns classical; when the bullies approach the music stops suddenly. When the bullies approach the geeks their world stops out of fear just as the music stopped. Additionally, the director Jake Kasdan efficiently used camera angles to depict the amount of power a character possesses compared to another, this ultimately demonstrates which 'clique' the character is in. During Sam’s gym class there is one team with all the bullies who are good at dodge ball causing them to be shown using a low angled camera shot. The other team is the geeks, who have less strength and are less competent at dodge ball thus they are shown from a high angled shot.
