At the start of the Viking Age virtually everyone in the Scandinavian countries was still pagan; there having been very little contact with Christianity. The greatest written source of their legends and myths are the two Eddas, which were based on oral tradition. The Vikings among themselves considered their religion “the way things are” and didn’t recognize it as belief. The Norse religion (which has no known name) was polytheistic: meaning, the Vikings worshipped more than one god or goddess.
