At the concentration camp, at night some of the other prisoners would talk of God and how He works in mysterious ways. They believed that they were being tested of their faith. Elie had a much different view of God after all he has been through because he "...was not denying His existence, but I doubted his absolute justice"(45). Elie still thought that God existed, but now he did not think God had power over everything. He believed if God had power over everything, then he would have prevented all the evil things that the Nazis did to the Jews and his family.
This quote is significant due to the fact that it shows Elie towards the end of his stay at the concentration camp. At this point of time Elie’s father had just died, which helped change Elie even more; for the worst even. Elie has become very unreligious, very cold-hearted by the end of his time at the concentration camp. While looking back to 1941 for Elie, once religious and compassionate, by the end of this story Elie gave up his faith completely and became rather unsentimental around the other prisoners. Imagine being a young 15 year old boy barely fed, dehydrated and at a camp that was created for the purpose of killing thousands of people and immediately once you arrive losing your mother and sister. Elie shows extreme mental strength during this event, rather than trying to stop it from happening
“I ran off to look for my father. And at the same time I was afraid of having to wish him a Happy New Year when I no longer believed in it,” (Wiesel, 75). Earlier, Elie talks about how he felt powerful and stronger than God himself, now that he was free from the Almighty. He also talks about how he felt alone but strong. Later, he shows retaliation against God.
Elie was held captive in concentration camps from 1944-1945. During his time in the concentration camps, he became grateful for what he had, overcame countless obstacles, and more importantly kept fighting until he was free. [The Holocaust is very important to learn about because it can teach you some important life lessons.] You should always be grateful for what you have, no matter what the circumstances are. Elie faces a permanent change of identity when he strays away from his old educated habits and becomes a selfish creature when going through pain. Another example of a change of identity within Elie is when his father dies, “And deep inside [him], if [he] could have searched the recesses of [his] feeble conscience, [he] might have found something like: Free at Last!” expressing that his father’s death finally freed him, out of the misery, out of the agony (112). Eliezer’s journey with his father through the excruciating concentration camps developed him from an innocent teenager to a mature man with the capabilities to succeed in unbearable situations.

In the book Night, Elie Wiesel offers many significant themes, but the question, “is family a blessing or a curse,” is one of the most prevalent and begging themes in the novel. During the novel, Wiesel often questions if he should try and keep his father around, or if life would just be better without him in the picture. “‘Don’t let me find him! If only I could get rid of this dead weight, so that I could use all my strength to struggle for my own survival, and only worry about myself,’ I immediately felt ashamed of myself, ashamed forever,” (Wiesel, 111).
The horrendous acts committed during World War II still haunt people today. A lot of people did not realize the extent of the brutality that took place in concentration camps across the country until this film was released.
