Strict regulations and limitations have been pursued already and clearly do not suffice. Statics brought to attention by gun control opponents, show that gun control laws have done little to reduce crime rates. Several restrictions have been made on certain guns, considered as overly dangerous, though in the hands of an unstable criminal even a legal hunting gun can be deadly. Countless restrictions have been made, however people have still found ways around them. If people are unstable and determined enough, they will find a gun, regardless of the restrictions or regulations.

There is such a thing as an unlicensed dealer selling handguns without a background check and proper documentation and it is legal. Those gun buyers are mainly causing chaos with mass shootings and yet others think the Second Amendment defends the right to own a weapon for “self-defense”. It is time for tougher gun control laws; the safety of the citizens depends on a safe environment free of guns from those using them for villainous purposes such as mass shootings or homicides.
The shootings that have happened in schools throughout America over the past few months has divided Americans on what they need to do as a nation to stop additional shootings from occouring. Many believe that creating new laws on buying weapons by requiring background checks, holding adults liable for the actions of their kids and requiring safety devices on weapons to stop youngsters will stop these massacres in schools from happening, it 's a step in the right direction, however, it 's not good enough nor is it effective enough, America needs well regulated gun laws and the politicians must understand that the laws should be based on facts, not opinions. There are several problems that need to be looked at in order to determine which laws are necessary. According to a recent study, America has the highest amount gun related deaths every year in the world. “Germany, has 371 gun related deaths, France 255, Canada 165, the united kingdom 68, Australia 65, Japan 39 and America, 11,200”.
Weather guns are banned or not, criminals will always find a way to obtain guns. According to John R. Lott, Jr., PhD, gun rights activist, stated on May 4th 2002, “The problem with such [gun control] laws is that they take away guns from law-abiding citizens, while would-be criminals ignore them”. Criminals don’t care about laws, that is why they are criminals. “Of 62 mass shootings in the United States between 1982 and 2012, 49 of the shooters used legally obtained guns. Collectively, 143 guns were possessed by the killers with about 75% obtained legally” (Follman Mark).
Gun control is what restricts people from buying and using guns, but these laws are not strengthened at the extent they need to be strengthened. This leads to many people getting these guns and using them to cause mass shootings all over the U.S. For example, according to the Council on Foreign Relationship, a news article that covers major world issues, in 2017, mass shootings at a music festival in Las Vegas and at a church near San Antonio have rekindled the gun control debate (“U.S. Gun Policy: Global Comparisons”). The fact that gun control is still not tightened is a huge margin and error, and still causes mass shootings as we just covered. Many people have said that we should not allow guns to be purchased, which would seem like the logical option. In 2013, after the Sandy Hook shooting, the Firearm Safety Act was passed in Maryland, which limited authorization to own assault rifles, limited magazines, and required people to get fingerprinted and to go through training before purchasing a gun. And yet we see the rates increasing. But looking closer at the bill, there are many loopholes. Gun laws is always going to be controversial, both sides will never get what they want by; all guns everywhere or no guns anywhere. A large source of guns used in crimes are unlicensed street dealers who either get their guns through illegal transaction with licensed dealers, straw purchase, or gun thefts. The illegal dealers are likely to sell the guns illegally on the street. Also, criminals gain access to guns is family and friends, by either sales or theft.

I want to strive in making a major impact on our country. Being President of the United States comes with a lot of responsibility. Gun bans leave law-abiding citizens vulnerable. Defensive gun use can be reported as high as 2.1 million to 2.5 million times per year across the nation (Malcom/Marshall 1). There are Approximately three hundred million guns within private homes (not including the unregistered firearms). If guns were to be successfully taken away, only the registered guns could be counted for therefore, criminals could likely still access firearms (Burris 1). Reports of gun violence within or near areas that allow law abiding, gun registered citizens has gone silent due to the fact that there is nothing go report (Burris 2).
Gun control laws are very strict. There are only certain guns that are legal. The places that are generally under attack are gun free zones. The criminals and psychos know where they can do the most harm. People that intend to commit crimes with firearms will commit them.
The nationwide availability of these guns creates a major problem regarding who buy them, from general gun stores, to gun shows / conventions, to even Walmart, getting ahold of a gun is still pretty easy in this year. Especially at gun shows though, some where you ¨don 't have to go through a background check when they make a purchase at a gun show¨ (Smith). Aaron Smith, a writer from CNN, claims in his article about how easy it is to obtain a weapon, and how although shootings seem to go up, gun control laws seem to stand still. Without making it rules for obtaining these guns then how can we continue to be surprised by the constant mass shootings perpetrated by these criminals?
Society has always had problems with guns and the laws made around them, but even with the laws that have been made, guns are one of the number one sources of violence. The gun issues are getting worse each day, which is why something must be done. If nothing is done to stop this issue, what will happen? Guns in today’s society have gotten so bad, a call for gun control must be taken into action. Guns are causing many different problems, but the real problem is how easily accessible they are.
Guns are just a tool, like knives and hammers and it completely depends on the people on how they use it. People who support guns and arms say that the Second Amendment secures individual’s right to carry guns with them and that gun rights is needed for self-protection, and was intended for military to have peace and defend the country if needed (Spitzer, 70). Most of the Americans use guns as a source to protect themselves and they believe that gun ownership prevents crime. A study conducted on November 26, 2013 showed that bans on weapons did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level (Lane, 5). Moreover, even if the rules and regulations are executed on gun control, not all criminals obey the law.
Instead of banning or limiting guns, the evidence will show that removing the current restrictions and targeting individuals instead of guns will be a more effective process. The topic of gun control has two polarized opinions. One such opinion targets the individuals responsible for the crime, instead of just the weapons. John Moorhouse and Brent Wanner tackle the issue of gun control in their article “Does Gun Control Reduce Crime Or Does Crime Increase Gun Control”, which was published in 2006 in the twenty-sixth volume of the Cato Journal. These researchers looked at the effects gun control laws had on violent crime and gun violence in the individual states.
Every year thousands of lives are affected due to gun violence with a majority being murders, assaults, or suicides and many as a result of the shooter suffering from some sort of mental disorder. “The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention act of 1993 requires federally licensed firearms dealers to preform background checks on prospective firearms purchases to ensure that the firearm transfer would not violate any laws”(Federal Law on Background Checks). The Brady Act was put in place to insure people who cannot handle guns safely do not get their hands on them, yet they still do because of the illegal gun market. So what exactly is the illegal firearm market and how can it be prevented? Being such a big issue, how is this affecting firearms?
