What caused the little country to voice its mighty roar and take on the world giant? The timing of the American Revolution was right for both the colonists and the British subjects in England. For the colonists, they felt that they had no voice in Parliament and subsequently the laws and taxes that were passed on to them by Parliament were unfair, unjust and illegal. This resulted in them feeling that they were being over-taxed and that the laws passed on to them were unfair as they were not represented when the laws were created. This started to stir the frustration of the colonists but not quite to the boiling point. They felt this way because when the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763 the British government agreed to several things. In the treaty they agreed to: give back Louisburg which was won by the colonists in a hard fought battle; England won the land from the Atlantic west to the Mississippi, north to the to the land not claimed by the Hudson Bay Company, and south to what is now Florida. However, with the Proclamation of 1763, the British tried to stop its colonial expansion at the Appalachian Mountains in an effort to establish some peace with the Native Americans. There was also the issue of private land companies, financed by the southern elite, who had gobbled up large chunks of the land between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi. This angered many colonists as they felt that they were not fairly represented and were being pinched by the growing colonies and the greedy southern elite who were buying up large chunks of land for cheap then selling it at outrageous prices. The expense of The Seven Years War was not only felt by the colonists but the citizens living in Britain. With the national debt soaring Parliament had no choice but to raise import taxes on goods purchased by the commoner. This angered the British citizens in England as they felt that the colonies were not paying enough for the war.
