Do you think the mental aspect or the physical aspect is the most important when it comes to sports? Different people believe different things. However, I believe that the mental part of sports is the most important. In “What Could be Better than a Touchdown”, “Why We Run” and “Confessions of a Doper” there are examples of why mental strength and physical strength are important. I strongly believe that mental strength is just as important as physical strength in sports. I believe this because you have to be willing to train and make sacrifices in order to improve in the physical area of sports. In “Confessions of a Doper” the author explains on page 90 how he used drugs to achieve “that last 2 percent” that he needed to become an elite athlete. However, the other 98% was achieved by mental strength. In order to conquer that 98%, he spent all his time training and mentally preparing for his race. I know what you are thinking, isn’t training preparing physically? On page 89 Jonathan Vaughters says, ”At 5:30 every morning, I popped out of bed with excitement and purpose”. In “What Could be Better than a Touchdown” the author explains why a touchdown might not have been the best thing to do at the moment. The author says the New York Jets safety Dwight Lowery “breaks toward the ball, intercepts it, and dashes 26 yards into the end zone...and also, perhaps a mistake?”. Even though a touchdown is great, it’s not always the best option. The smartest option for Dwight Lowery was to drop to a knee, and let the offense run out the clock. If Lowery were to fumble, the Vikings would have had the ball “with two minutes left in the game” the Vikings would have been down by two”. The Vikings could have got in the red zone, kicked a field goal, and won. Being smart and aware can be just as important if not more important that being physically
