Sex, gender and sexuality has always been a prominent aspect of society. Views and discussion on said topics have always been relevant, adapting and changing over time. Historically, women have had very little rights in society, and being gay was illegal (this is still prevalent in some countries). However, this has changed in modern society, with women and gay individuals progressively gaining more rights and working towards equality in our society.

Media has been highly influential in shaping perceptions of gender and sexuality in current society. With the increase in globalisation, there has been change and adaption with individual ideologies surrounding the matter. Western societies current understanding of gender and sexuality, is largely due to the media. Many religions hold strong views towards gender roles, with many religions only allowing men to partake in particular roles, such as being a priest. This assists in shaping individual’s views on gender as they may view males as more dominant and ‘important’ in comparison to females, due to such roles.
