1) What do you see on the home page for NCTM?
Go to each link at the top of the page. Be alert to what information is provided so that later in the semester, you can remember it exists!
NCTM is a website for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. It offers classroom resources, publications, standards, professional development, grants, and awards. The website also offers different books you can buy and membership to different journals. The homepage shows recent news articles having to do with teaching Mathematics in America and a calendar of events for teachers that they can utilize in order to become even more well informed with recent concepts and ideas of teaching Mathematics. It provides resources for teachers to help students with concepts they are struggling with or to give amazing ideas to get students more involved with learning these concepts. One of the ones I looked at is called “Demystifying Division”, where it has different activities for students to do so that they can work on understanding the concept of division. I would use this link towards “Student Explorations” if a student or class needs extra help with some math concepts or just to get students thinking with the ideas these explorations have to offer. 2) Who is the current president of NCTM? The current president of NCTM is Matt Larsen, who used to be a specialist in Mathematics for public schools in Lincoln, Nebraska for about 20 years. In his early years after college he was a mathematics teacher for a little while and has co-authored and authored many books on teaching mathematics especially now with Common Core Standards. He is a very credible man for the amount of work he has done with mathematics through earning his minor in mathematics and more in instruction.
