Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” Gatsby and Tom are different, but one of the things they have in common is Daisy; they both want to protect her yet they do it differently, and they both lie to her about different things. One of the things that Tom and Gatsby have in common is that they both to protect Daisy. On page 155 of “The Great Gatsby” Fitzgerald wrote “He couldn’t possibly leave Daisy until he knew what she was going to do.”(This is Nick when he was thinking about Gatsby.). This shows that Gatsby is worried about her and wants to protect her. Gatsby has been trying to get her back for years and he does not want to give her up now. On page 172 of “The Great Gatsby” Fitzgerald wrote “But she and Tom had gone away early that afternoon and taken baggage with them.” After the events of the deaths of Myrtle and Gatsby Tom took Daisy and their daughter away from the conflict. Tom did love Myrtle, but he did like Daisy because unlike Myrtle Daisy has the social class that he likes. As a result Tom and Gatsby both want to protect Daisy, but their ways of doing it are different. Gatsby will stand up and fight for her, while Tom will run away from his issues. …show more content…

On page 156 of “The Great Gatsby” “He let her believe that he was a person from much the same strata as herself.” Gatsby lied to her about this because he wanted her to think that he could protect her from anything. She was the first girl to ever be truly desirable to him. On page 19 of “The Great Gatsby” Fitzgerald wrote “‘Tom’s got some woman in New York.’ ‘Got some woman?’ I repeated blankly. Miss Baker nodded.” This show that Tom does not feel the need to keep his affair a secret. He does not see anything wrong with the affair or lying. In conclusion Gatsby lies to let Daisy feel safe around him, while when Tom lies it makes Daisy feel unsure of what Tom’s true intentions really
