In Timmy Reeds short story, “Birds and Other Things We Placed in Our Hearts,” there is a significant amount of imagery and symbolism through the authors use of style, characterization, and theme. The profound use of symbolism in the authors style of writing greatly captures the use of imagery throughout the story. The beginning sentence of the story reads, “As our chests hollowed out, we filled them with birds” (Reed). This beginning sentence is simply stating that the hearts of humans have withered away, leaving them feeling empty, and to fill that emptiness they filled their cavity with birds.

Samuel Smiles, a scottish author and governor, said, “Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey toward it, casts the shadow of our burden behind us.” Roland Smith wrote a great short story based on the topic of hope and determination. Roland Smith wrote a short story, “The Ghost Bird”. This story is about a girl named Hannah who teams up with Mr. Tanner to find the rare ivorybills that are on Mr. Tanner’s property and never gives up on hope to find them. The author uses characters personality traits and setting to convey the theme of even in the most difficult times, never lose hope.
The metaphor of the birds also serves to create a sense of movement and tension within the poem, as the birds engage in a battle of wills that reflects the speaker's own struggle for
Throughout the story, the narrator feels powerless about his situation, and he envies birds for their ability to fly and be free. The protagonist says, "I told Mom my theory of why we like birds –– of how birds are a miracle because they prove to us there is a finer, simpler state of being which we may strive to attain.” The protagonist of the story uses birds as a metaphor for freedom, escape, and finding nobility in what he views as a harsh world. The protagonist is saying that birds are a symbol of hope and freedom and that they represent a simpler way of life that we should strive to achieve. The narrator expresses his desire to become a bird, as he says, “just make me a bird - that’s all I ever wanted - a white graceful bird free of shame and taint and fear of loneliness.”

While the perception of the reader remains the same, the narrator’s perception of the bird becomes more jumbled and insane when he starts asking questions like “is there balm in Gilead? (line 89)”. His troubled mind seeks for relief from the bird . Also he is asks if there is a balm that can heal anything, and if he will ever be able to embrace Lenore again. When relief of grief doesn’t come the image of the bird changes to a prophet possibly sent from the devil.
By placing the bird so high up, yet incredibly close to the family, it can be taken as a warning. The bird only appears in this single line throughout the excerpt, acting as an observer but also as a predator waiting for a chance to strike, providing an unsettling truth to death being out of our control. Though many efforts may be made to create a sanctuary, there are things out of one's control and when power is exercised, there will be forces fighting back. The opening sections of the novel A Bird in the House demonstrate this clearly by how Margarets Laurence's’ use of literary devices can be interpreted.
All that we see or seem is the dream within the dream" (Genius). The protagonist reflects the bird as being a dream. The Raven saying "Nevermore" is probably a sign saying the Raven will never leave, also meaning Virginia will never be forgotten. Edgar Allan Poe
In my favorite English class with my honors teacher, Mr. Palmer, I read a similar message about birds. This poem (also my favorite poem of all time) is called “The Waterfowl” by William Cullen Bryant. Whither, 'midst falling dew, While glow the heavens with the last steps of day, Far, through their rosy depths, dost thou pursue Thy solitary way? Vainly the fowler’s eye Might mark thy distant flight, to do thee wrong, As, darkly seen against the crimson sky
She says that hope can be found “(…) in the starry heads of dandelions turned sages,” which is pretty interesting because some people might view dandelions as weeds, but other find hope in them (5-6). Next she makes a similar comparison in saying that hope “(…) sticks to the wings of
The poem told the reader and led them along with the feelings of the poem. Expressing true emotions on how things are like for the bird. Hard, painful, suffering, struggling, lonely, angry, frustrated, showing the birds feelings, the author was trying to portray a message. It was showing that life for the bird can be shown through others shoes. The hardships in life that you can’t escape and the overriding thoughts of a trapped soul.
Climate change is the biggest long-term threat to the Great Barrier Reef and coral reefs worldwide, according to the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan. It has caused sea temperature increases, ocean acidification, altered weather patterns, and rising sea levels. The sea temperature increases affect many species. It causes coral bleaching to occur, which is when the microscopic algae separates from coral, taking the color, as well as the energy away. It affects the photosynthesis and reproduction of seagrass, the reproduction of coral, and enables a range of microscopic organisms that cause disease to thrive.
The daughter, much like the wild bird, is struggling with her heavy cargo of who she is. The bird, in the end, does find the open window and clears the sill of the world. Again, this can be related to the daughter in that eventually she will overcome her obstacles and find her identity. The poem ends on the lines: "It is always a matter, my darling, Of life or death, as I had forgotten.
Lines one through seven define the free bird as one that “floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wing in the orange sun rays” (Angelou) this is a representation of freedom and joy. The second and third stanza lines, eight through fourteen defines the caged bird that “stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage” (Angelou) where these words reference isolation and despair compared to the freedom in stanza one. These lines create a visual response of the bird’s environments. The third stanza is repeated at the end of the poem for prominence as it reflects the two birds are so different.
