Integrity, to me, is the fact that one cannot fool one’s consciousness. Integrity is the acceptance of the fact that a man is defined by two attributes, his body and his mind - a mind with a sense of right and wrong, a judge that does not change its conviction due to public opinion. Integrity requires one to show great courage in being truthful to the truth. Integrity, is a vital part of an engineer’s life, academically, personally and professionally. When in a community, the definition of integrity no longer limits itself to staying loyal to our own personal beliefs, but showing loyalty to rational principles that define the environment we are in. When in a professional or academic setting, integrity does not remain a choice but a necessity, a commitment to honor the ethical values and principles of the company or the varsity. Employees call in sick if they don’t have paid time off and have a friend to visit. Entrepreneurs ‘adjust’ and overstate their financial activities so as to get the highest valuation from a possible investor. This list can go on and in each case the person being dishonest can argue that the final result justified their dishonest means and the lack of integrity. They can also argue that by cutting corners power and profit can be gained quickly. In fact, I can think of many examples where such people have been successful and survive without getting caught. However, such momentary results come with a high price with far reaching consequences. If caught, this person will lose his ability to be a reliable person that one can trust, a person of integrity, which is a valuable quality in a person’s life. Success, monetary or power, is temporary, but success in a community of people who believe you to be a person of integrity, is
