Lee also is the bestselling author of To Kill A Mockingbird. To Kill A Mockingbird was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1961. The book's setting occurs in a made-up town in Alabama called Maycomb. In the story, Scout explains what is happening to her brother’s broken arm. To do this she talks about her family's history as it is happening. Something that is happening in the book is that some of Scout’s neighbors are betraying her family, but mostly Atticus. How they are doing this by calling her father bad names behind his back. Catching Walter Cunningham in the schoolyard at recess gave Scout some pleasure (Lee 30). Scout is a tomboy because she catches Walter Cunningham in the schoolyard rubbing his nose in the dirt. This can be said that only boys would do this because most boys are rough and rebellious toward others. “I could not possibly hope to be a lady if I wore breeches; when I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasn’t supposed to be doing things that required pants” (Lee 108). Scout does not like to wear dresses. Instead, she wants to wear pants and a shirt. This is an excellent example of how she can appear as a tomboy to the reader since boys don’t wear dresses. Instead, they wear just a shirt and pants. Mrs. Dubose asks Scout what she is doing in overalls. Then, she says that Scout should be in a dress and camisole, and calls her a young lady (Lee 135). It seems to irritate Mrs. Dubose that Scout is not wearing a dress or camisole, but Scout enjoys wearing her overalls.
