What is an athlete? Society today is filled with many athletes whom are defined as a character who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina. With this definition being said, what does it truly mean to be an athlete? It does not just mean one who plays a sport and practices that sport to become better at it, there is a deeper meaning behind the word that many people do not see the aspect of. Athletes contain traits on and off the court that no one realizes. Not only does the physical strength of an athlete need to be proficient, but the mental strength of one needs to as well. The Greek were known for their athletics because they were the first to introduce these types of competitions of men battling it out to see who was the fittest of them all. All of the men who participated were known as athletes, and today we see athletes being described in a very similar manner. Also, the athletes who participated in the Olympic games were just men, no woman was allowed to participate because men were seen as the greater gender. Nowadays, there are both men and women who participate in the Olympics to compete against one another. How strong and fast they are, but seem to forget the mental part of them. Being gifted with physical ability, strength, and stamina is not what an athlete is all about. They are mentally smarter than they are physically because of the dedication and passion they have. The drive and determination is all in their mental game, the output is the physical strengths they earn. Nothing would be achievable if the mental state is not stronger than the physical one because without it they lose the aspect of wanting to be the best, and going up to the next level of competition. Society can not judge an athlete just because of their physicality, they must incorporate the mentality one has to become who they have
