The Colors Of Gatsby Certain colors represent different qualities in a person's life. It also makes someone feel emotions, such as tenderness, concern, anger, whatever it may be. Such as the colors white, green, gray, silver, and blue. Any of these could represent anything in a human's life, but here are some ways that The Great Gatsby symbolizes each of them. What color does a bride wear? What color is worn at christenings? White. It would be easy to say that white represents innocence, considering that is what white has always symbolized to many people. In The Great Gatsby, however; it is harder to say that. Daisy and Jordan both wear a lot of white. As said in the book, “It wasn't until then that I connected this Gatsby with the one in …show more content…
As near the end of the book Daisy is explained as careless and uncaring about other's feelings. It can be seen as though Daisy started innocently and became “dirty” by the events and happenings of how her life went. Maybe she is considered innocent because she is still married to Tom . Moving on to Jordan, she is anything but an innocent and girly person, she consistently lies and she also plays golf. Neither are characteristics of an innocent, and definitely not a girly person. She may be seen as innocent because she has yet to marry. Next, think about the “white” palace of the East Egg Village. White could also represent shining riches, which cover up the ineffable insides of the lives of people that stay in them. The white windows and the white steps of both Daisy's and Gatsby's houses could represent the innocence that Daisy and Gatsby portray, but inside, they are actually not innocent at all. It is all a matter of looking deeper into the “windows” or taking a walk up the “steps” to see how they really are inside. Nick thinks that Gatsby is all that for awhile, but then they get pulled over by a cop for speeding and Gatsby takes out a white card to show to the police officer as a bribe to get away from …show more content…
Or is it more like Isn't that sky mighty blue today? When you think about it, blue could represent fire and ice or completely opposite things. Both could be right. Blue could be a sad color, showing unhappiness and regret. But, it could also represent being bright and enjoying the good parts in life. Tom's says in The Great Gatsby, “It's a blue car, a coupé.” (140). It could represent a happy thing because Tom enjoys being rich and having enough money to buy a car that nice. Although, it could also show sadness because Myrtle had just died and he was having to tell the policeman that his car was not the one that ran over his mistress, his “girl.” You never know what a color could represent, and also what it means to different people in their own lives. The color blue could also represent Gatsby's dreams that are unrealistic, such as being with Daisy and her run back and only loving him forever and always. Most things that Gatsby owns or even sends to others tend to be blue, such as said in the book by a woman talking about getting a dress sent by Gatsby, “... It was gas blue with lavender beads,”(43). Gatsby has a lot of illusions about how his life is going to go, albeit he did end up with the fortune and sophistication that he planned for from his childhood, he did not end up with Daisy, his one true love, in the end. The eyes of T.J. Eckleburg are “blue and ginormous,” so blue could also represent the immensity of God looking over everyone.
