The theme for the first 5 chapters are things are not always as they seem. In chapter 1 we originally thought that Mrs. Dodds was a regular teacher, but know we know she is a bird like figure. In the text it says, “Her eyes began to glow like barbecue coals. Her fingers stretched, turning into talons. Her jacket melted into large, leathery wings. She was a shriveled hag with bat wings and claws and mouth full of yellow fangs, and she was about to slice me to ribbons. This shows that Mrs. Dodds is a mythical creature. In chapter 1 we also thought at first that Mr. Brunner’s pen was a normal pen, but now we know that it turned into a sword.
