“Straw into Gold” is a short narrative account written by a Latina woman named Sandra Cisneros. Cisneros was a young Latina born in Chicago to Mexican-American parents that did the best they could for her. Cisneros isn’t a stereotypical Latina girl; she wants to become a writer and had a dream, that she was going to leave her house without marriage. In her culture, she could move out only when she is married to a man and is not allowed to leave the house unless marriage. This account is about Cisneros, hard times with her life and struggles. Some the struggles you will read about is her MFA exam. In "Straw into Gold", Cisneros uses imagery, comparisons and contrasts, and metaphors to show the readers that although life can give you obstacles you just have to overcome them. Cisneros shows us pictures when she writes, which is good if you are a visual reader. Cisneros was invited to a dinner, Mexican of food when in fact she had to make it. When Cisneros was making the tortillas she said “i am glad my mama wasn’t there” (Cisneros 1), because she was comparing her tortillas to her moms, she thought her moms were way better and the way she described it people would say her moms were better. She is comparing her tortillas to hers she made in the restaurant and she thinks her moms were way better. Cisneros was talking about her Master of Fine Arts exam and says “just as i am amazed i could finish my MFA exam (lopsided and crooked but finished all the same time” (Cisneros 1). She is comparing her MFA exam to her time when she made the tortillas crooked and burnt. She very educationally added comparing and contrasting in her account and made it flow wonderfully, but she also uses some metaphors to help the reader understand
