The third of four children, he was expected to do the same chores as his older sisters Elizabeth Ainsworth and Esther Rodgers, and younger sister Mary Dekker. He had a comfortable childhood with his mother, a retired school teacher, and his father, a manager at a local flour mill. Even so he had some challenges.
When Kino heard about the pearl, it was called “the pearl that might be” meaning that the pearl could exist, but it is not one hundred percent positive that it actually existed. On page 23, the narrator described how everyone feels about the pearl. The people of the town start to view Kino differently in a sesne of him having the power over their most possessed dreams and desires. "he, curiously became every man's enemy. " It is evident, that everyone in the town sees Kino as way to get what they want and in order to do that they feel as though they have to compete with him. The people of the town view Kino as more powerful due to the opportunity, Kino now carries with him.
Ever since Kino got his “Pearl of the World”, many things changed for him. He, and a few others, got greedier. They would do anything for the pearl, going to the extent of killing people to keep the pearl. Then there was the people who weren't greedy. Some wanted Kino to stop his quest for the money he wanted, and just take the money that was given to him.
After halfheartedly pawing at a smaller one, eagerness overcomes him, and Juana softly urges him to open the prize catch. Expertly cutting into the edge of the shell Kino cuts the shell open to reveal the biggest pearl that they have ever seen. The sun of the gulf reflected off the perfect surface of the pearl. Her eyes nearly as wide as the pearl, Juana shrieks “Kino” shrilly,in astonishment to find that Coyotito’s wound has improved in the presence of the great pearl. Kino, overcome with emotion, tenses his entire body and lets out a resounding,guttural roar.
“ ‘I am cheated,’ Kino cried fiercely. ‘My pearl is not for sale. I will go, perhaps even to the capital’ ” (52). Before Kino said this, he is told that his pearl was not worth anymore than 1,000 pesos.
I believe that many factors have contributed to Kino’s thoughtless behavior and his desire for wealth. First, the pearl has indeed had a negative effect on Kino. Kino slowly changes from the content husband that we see him in the first chapter to the paranoid man who harms his wife (a woman he once admired greatly) and makes impulsive decisions for the benefit of wealth. Second, Kino is keeping the pearl for the pearl has some ties with his dignity as the other critics have concluded. Before the pearl, Kino only had his canoe as a way to support those he loves, but within the pearl he sees new opportunities and luxuries, and, as head of the household, he must try to better his wife’s and son’s life.
