Symbolism is basically the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. The author uses the symbols to express mystical ideas, emotions and state of mind. Generally it is an object representing an entirely different meaning that is much deeper and more significant and sometimes even a word spoken by a person might have a symbolic value. The author uses symbolism to display his perspective of the nature of human. Piggy, Jack, Simon and Ralph could be viewed as symbolic characters in William Golding’s novel the Lord of the Flies. Symbols play a main role in the LOTF, each symbol has its own importance and significance.

When the Conch is broken it signifies Savage instincts in all the boys. Piggy’s Glasses acts as a symbol by representing the power of science and intellectual effort in the boys. When Jack raids Ralph’s camp and steals the glasses the power of making the fire is gained by the Savage group. Another symbol is The Signal Fire; this is for them to get rescued by the passing ships. The Signal Fire is the bridge for the boys to get in connection with the civilization. When the boys let the fire go out than we can understand that the boys lose their hope and willingness to be rescued. The signal fire can be used the check the strength of the civilised instincts on the island. However the boys get rescued by the Savage fire and not the Signal fire. The Beast is the frightening thing on the island which creates fear in the boys. As all the boys start to develop into savage people the fear of the beast tends to increase. Simon is the only who doesn’t believe in the Beast but no one tries to understand his way of thinking. Beast is the reason why one of the boys gets killed. The Beast represents evil and darkness on the island. The Lord of the Flies is the Pig’s head Jack cuts which is
