Death has been, and is still a very popular component of literature, which explains why it has been among the most frequent used subject in literature. As death is presented as a symbol, plot device or a theme in literature works. One of the most renowned classical authors, William Shakespeare, who often uses death throughout his works to help convey his message to the readers. In Shakespeare’s short tragedy, Macbeth, tells the story of a courageous Scottish general Macbeth, who receives a prophecy from three witches that one day he will become king. He is consumed by ambition and prompted to action by his wife, which unfolds in multiply murders and evidently his death. Where Macbeth has a vision of a dagger floating before him that is indicating the way to Duncan’s chamber. This is stated in Act two scene one, “Is this a dagger which I see before me, the handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee”. The dagger in this quote symbolizes both the throne and the darkness that will fall upon him. The dagger symbolizes Macbeth’s desire for the throne for the reason that he sees the dagger floating before him but cannot grasp it. So is the throne, Macbeth can see the position of him be king but cannot grasp the position. When the dagger is grasped so is the throne because Macbeth slayed the king in his sleep to attain the position as King. The dagger also serves as a symbol of conscience because it floats in the air representative of actions that will soon take place. The King has not yet been murdered, but the dagger foreshadows his death. Macbeth has not yet committed the unthinkable murder, but his conscience is already riddled with guilt.
