A significant piece of figurative language that the author included in the novel,” In The Time of Butterflies “ is, “I can see my hand in an endless slow-motion rise a mind all its own and come down on the astonished, made up the face(Alvarez 100).” This example of personification tells us about in the book when Minerva slapped Trujillo. Although hands don't usually have a mind of their own, this connects to the type of character that Minerva is. This shows how brave and very mischievous she is. Minerva doesn't really care about high power
Lighting bugs, firedevils, and fireflies are all names to describe a flying bug capable of glowing in the dark. In literature these insects are often used to symbolize the simpler things in life, enjoying moments and all that comes with them. In the excerpt from Tending Roses this idea is also present through the story inside the journal titled “When Did the Fireflies Stop Dancing”. When the main character Katie reads this journal she is shown the life and death of her grandmother’s dreams and desires, she is reminded to stop and look for fireflies.
Julia Alvarez, author of In the Time of the Butterflies, expresses Minerva’s dilemmas through the use of symbolism to emphasize the struggle of choosing to prioritize her family or fighting in the country’s revolution. Having been apart from her family for so long, Minerva, the second daughter amongst four, wishes to live a normal life with her family and to see her children grow up. But the responsibility she holds as the country’s savior weighs heavily on her and becomes a grave issue for her. After she is released from prison, Minerva feels as if the house arrest is a blessing in disguise: “But to tell you the truth, it was as if I’d been served my sentence on a silver platter. By then, I couldn’t think of anything I wanted more than to
I hope your summer was just as good as mine. This summer I read the The Boys in the Boat, and I enjoyed the author’s details about how the olympics went upon their success. I was very surprised how the author was very detailed about the struggles they overcome. As I was reading, I thought of our team sports class and how Daniel James Brown’s descriptions of not giving up and working together as one related to our classes discussions about playing certain sports.

I 'm so proud to be your mother and so proud of the woman you 've become. Thanks for bringing Marc into our family, and Charlotte and Aidan into the world. And Bill, that conversation we started in the law library 45 years ago is still going strong. It 's lasted through good times that filled us with joy, and hard times that tested us.
The author of the short story uses change and contrast in characterisation to emphasise that people live life rather than just existing. The author initially characterises Jordan Matthews as a routine-driven, isolated and compassionless man. The central protagonist is contrasted with the character of the flower seller who is free-spirited, ephemeral, and associated with the natural world. Through an encounter between the two, Matthews first changes in subtle ways and gradually is transformed into a character that embraces freedom, values relationships and sees the world through the eyes of nature/ develops a love for nature. Through these techniques the author explores the detrimental effect of routine taking over Matthew’s life/ the continual
In the book, Song of Solomon, by Toni Morrison, the image of flight is a major symbol. It signifies true life and the living of it, as well as a sense of freedom, of release, and touches the lives of all the main characters in the book, as it is a part of the dead family history. But the most affected is Milkman, who embarks on a journey of self-discovery, and discovers this true meaning of flight. The first instance of Morrison's use of the image of flight is at the very beginning of the book. On May 17, 2016 I walked the stage and received my diploma. I am happy I had this change in my life it matured me made me realize and learn many things but most importantly it made me a better person I do not regret this changed at all. It's never late to go back and finish what i had started I did not just go to school since preschool to just give up almost at the finish line? A quote I picked from “Superman and Me” was “I was never taught how to write poetry, short stories or novels”. Sadly I prefered to fool around in school and not paying attention in class, I wasn’t taking my education seriously at all but thankfully my life changed with just a simple change of schools.
