Throughout the novel Fitzgerald uses color symbolism and characterization to describe these complex character’s personalities. Several settings, objects and people are described with a certain color, behind the color is a significance that can help us get a better picture of the type of character being described. Gatsby is an outrageous person that can be hard to understand. Gatsby has always been in love with Nick’s cousin, Daisy and wants to relive the past when he was with her, throughout the novel Gatsby does some actions that make him a mysterious character. In chapter six Gatsby is characterized as being fake when Nick says, “James Gatz that was really, or at least legally his name ” (Fitzgerald 98). The author is describing Gatsby by telling us what Nick feels towards all the stories Gatsby has come up with. Wilson is a character with severe importance to the story “The Great Gatsby”. He is introduced when Nick and Tom take a trip to the valley of ashes. The setting itself can be used to describe Wilson as being a negative character. In chapter nine Wilson is described when Nick says, “perhaps a detective, used the expression “madman” as he bent over Wilson’s body that afternoon”(Fitzgerald 163). Nick describes Wilson when he mentions what the detective has to say about Wilson’s body at the crime scene.
