Dreams, what do they mean to you? “Winter Dreams” is a short story that was written in 1922 by an up and coming author at that time by the name of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald is generally known for is great novel The great Gatsby. Many of Fitzgerald’s literary work includes the same theme such as poor boy becomes rich to get the girl or the American Dream of wealth and status. F. Scott Fitzgerald like to write about the corruption of society and that with great amounts of wealth come great responsibility. “Winter Dreams” is about a middle-class boy from Black Bear, Minnesota falls in love with Judy Jones at a very young age. Years late he comes back to his old town where he regains his love for her but will never fully obtain her love and affection the way he so desires. Through many ways F. Scott Fitzgerald show Dexter as determined using characterization. Fitzgerald also uses symbolism to show deeper meaning in the story. The use of season change, colors and even character names. Fitzgerald uses seasons to help further with the mood of the story. “In the winter, he frequently skis over the snow-covered fairways, a landscape that fills him with melancholy” (“Winter Dreams”). The use of winter is to show things dying off due to the cold. Dexter’s Winter dream has died off and with him skiing over the snow-covered golf course he is remembering his past. “Summer, fall, winter, spring, another summer, another fall—so much he had given of his active life to the incorrigible lips of Judy Jones” (Fitzgerald). The list of the seasons shows the elapsed time of the story. Each of these seasons must do with what Dexter was going through at that time.
