Throughout the novel of The Death of Ivan Ilych, Tolstoy conveys his thematic focus through his unique use of diction. Tolstoy examines several factors that have altered Ivan Ilych’s lifestyle. The only way to enhance our understanding of these factors is to observe how Tolstoy portrays Ivan’s evolving comprehension of what death means to him. Evidently, such portrayal can be thoroughly observed and understood by carefully analyzing Tolstoy’s use of diction. Furthermore, there are several themes that Tolstoy focuses on primarily, which are often associated with the depiction of the human existence as a conflict between different sides of the spectrum and Ivan’s tendency to alienate himself from the world.
The straggles of the kids whose parents are not at home a whole lot are shown in the novel Williwaw. Which is written by Tom Bodett and published in 1999, is a story about two kids from Alaska, Ivan and September who are 12 and 13 years old, they got into the trouble because they did not follow their dads rules. The main theme “challenges of life” can clearly be seen within the novel Williwaw. For Ivan and September challenges of taking care for themselves means staying at home alone for several weeks because their father is not home and their mother died a few years ago. That means that they have to look after themselves and stay out of the troubles and the most important follow their dads rules.
In one part of the story Sergei showed no care for a little boy, when he knocked on his door, he opened the door but he didnt want to let the kid in and also he needed a picture of his face for a movie which he didnt want to do either, which showed that he didnt care. There was a part when he showed care.. When the Little boy tried to steal his goldfish, he killed him the goldfish asked if he wanted to wish him back to life but he said no because he only had one wish
Question 1: The three examples of figurative language that I am going to analyze are, rhetorical questions, personification, and similes . Rhetorical question: “Here or elsewhere, what did it matter? Die today, or tomorrow, or later.” (Wiesel 98) This example of a Rhetorical question really adds to the text by almost forcing the reader to think to themselves, and actually try to answer the question that is being asked. It involves the reader and therefore can make the story more appealing to them.
“He would go to his study, lie down, and again be alone with It: face to face with It. And nothing could be done with It except to look at it and shudder.” (6.12) While Ilyich was all alone with the very thought of death he began to evaluate his entire life. He was not contented by where life had brought him, or those around him. Ilyich truly began to shut down his entire life and basically call the entirety of it a waste.
Among other essays I have read in this book, the essay El Camino Doloroso written by David Searcy seems to have won my heart over the other ones. This story is short; in fact, it only has three pages, but the message Mr. Searcy conveys surpass these simple pages. To be honest, I have to read this essay three times to understand what is going on with the character and what is happening in this story. At last, I come up with this: In this essay, David Searcy wants those who believe dreams are flaws and useless to think that dreams and love are those that motivateki people to live.
In the short story by Leo Tolstoy, “Death of Ivan Ilych” in this readers opinion it is about the changes that a person goes through when they are dying. The writer of this paper will show the stages of death that are represented here; the stages are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance. Ivan Ilych in the story was in good health, he really didn’t have any issues. Ivan because ill after a fall he took from a ladder while decorating his home, he bruised his side. Although he brushed it off thinking he was a strong and agile man, someone else might have killed themselves.

Throughout Maus, Vladek is telling his son Artie about how he survived the Holocaust. He explained to Artie that before the war, life was good for him and his family. He tells him everything about his experience during the war as well, from the relationship he had with his family and Anja, to his friendships with both gentiles and Jews, to things he might of found or kept throughout the war. However now, a few decades after the war, Vladek’s lifestyle has changed drastically from during the war, and even from before the war. Vladek’s friendships, relationships, and everyday life has changed due to the Holocaust and WWII.
Sansom writes, “He faces his mortality and realizes the failure of constructing a life on preferences and abstract relationships” (421). Shallow relationships and a focus on outward appearance lead to a neglect of Ivan’s actual purpose. In this time of Ivan grappling with death, Tolstoy proposes the idea that before we die “the choice is not how to act in ways so that we can control our death and question the meaning of life, but whether there is a reality to which we can find real value as individuals that is not nullified by the existential syllogism” (Sansom 424). The control that he sought as a way to defend himself against chaos does not lead him to peace; instead, it disappoints him and helps move Ivan to a place of deeper understanding. At the very end during an interaction with his son, Ivan finally “empties himself of meaningless false images of human purpose, [and] he then sees how to respond honestly with integrity to his destiny” (Sansom 427).

In Maus, Art Spiegelman records his personal accounts of trying to delve into his father’s traumatic past. His father, Vladek, is a Jew from Poland who survived persecution during World War II. Art wants to create a graphic novel about what his father went through during the Holocaust, so he reconnects with Vladek in order to do so. Due to the horrifying things that the Jews went through he has trouble opening up completely about all the things that happened to him. But after Art gets together with his father many times, he is finally able to understand the past legacy of the Spiegelman family.
The death of Ivan Ilyich, explored by Leo Tolstoy is comparative to the Buddhists concepts of suffering. I shall begin to explain this through breaking down each Buddhist concept of suffering and comparing it to Ivan Ilyich. The first Buddhist concept we learn is from the Four noble truths. “All life is Dukkha” Dukkha is usually interpreted as suffering but is means more then this. It can be referred to the basic fact that something about human existence is ‘out-of-wack’.

Ivan Ilych knows “that He whose understanding mattered would understand,” (Tolstoy 62), showing that God’s opinion is what matters the most, and the only way to end his suffering is to have God forgive him and finally accept death. “It grew clear to [Ivan Ilych] that what had been oppressing him and would not leave him was all dropping away at once…he must…release them and free himself from these sufferings,” (Tolstoy 62).
