Why In The Americas of 1775, You’d be Safer as a Loyalist At the point in which the Revolutionary War started in 1775 Americans compelled to decide weather they would support Britain and become a loyalist, or fight for there freedom as a Patriot. The loyalist, also known as Tories, supported the mother country whereas Patriots strongly resisted and past or present ties to Britain. For many of the colonist, the decision was not an easy one. There were numerous variables that were considered other than loyalty the monarch or ones freedom. When making this commitment, colonist pondered who's victory they'd benefit more from, the British or the colonies. Many people also believed it was safer because many tax collectors and other loyalist were abused, teased, or even tared and feathered. As stated in document 2: A Loyalist is Tared and Feathered, a man was striped naked on a cold winter night and paraded through the town in a cart. He was dragged out of the cart, beaten and thrown back in again. As stated on page 155 of American History, sons of liberty and others group would tar and feather and abuse tax collectors. Although tarring and feathering was not fatal, it was very humiliating. Document 3: The Continental Congress Explains the Need to Fight, the colonist emphasize there logic that if they do not fight they will lose their land and their freedom and become slaves. They believed this was unjust because their ancestors had earned and there sons and daughters who will come after them should have it too. Even though there were some risk to being a loyalist there a risk to every decision that is made. However in in Document 2: A loyalist is Tarred and Feathered, the man who was attacked was old and weak. Some tax collectors who were ambushed may have been able to ward of their attackers or have escaped them. Most people however, were not attacked because they didn't collect taxes or did t walk around to late at night. However they over exaggerated the outcome of the war if it did not favor their side. Slavery was not as popular at that time unless on owned a large plantation in the country. Most slaves were African or African American. The British winning the war would mean that they could freely tax the colonies, if the colonist lost they would probably be more heavily taxed to help Britain become more financially stable.
