Introduction
The Industrial Revolution took place from the 18th to 19th century. This was a period when predominantly rural areas in Europe became industrial and urban. Before the Industrial Revolution, which started in Britain in the late 1700s, manufacturing and production was done at home by people using small hand tools or basic machines. Industrialisation marked a shift to powered, special purpose machinery, factories and mass production. Industries such as iron and textile played a massive role in the Industrial Revolution which also saw systems such as transport, communication and banking improve. While industrialisation improved the standard of living and brought about an increased volume and variety of manufactured goods, it also resulted in terrible working conditions and grim employment for the poor and working classes. These included the flying shuttle, the spinning jenny, the spinning frame and the cotton cotton gin. These textile machines aided the handling of large quantities of harvested cotton. During the year of 1764, a British man called James Hargreaves invented and also improved the spinning jenny which was a hand powered multiple spinning machine that was the first to improve upon the spinning wheel.
James Hargreaves was born in a town called Oswaldtwistle in England in the year of 1720. Then, he received no formal education which meant that he was never taught to read or write. Therefore he learned his trade as a carpenter and weaver. It is said that while James Hargreaves was inventing his daughter Jenny knocked over a spinning wheel and as he watched the wheel roll along the floor, Hargreaves came up with the idea of the spinning jenny. However, this story was later said to be untrue. Jenny was allegedly the name of Hargreaves’ wife and so he named the invention after
