What Honor Does Jonas In The Giver

Was Jonas selected to be the receiver a punishment or an honor? It was an honor for Jonas to be selected as the new Receiver of Memory. Jonas experienced feelings that he wouldn’t have experienced without being the receiver. Jonas earns his honor as receiver through taking in harsh memories to protect the community from going through the pain. Jonas is nervous about the pain, but knows that he will receive the highest honor in the community. Jonas experienced feelings that he wouldn’t have experienced without being the receiver. On page “By now Jonas had experienced countless bits of happiness, things he hadn’t known before.” Jonas experienced things that only past receivers had experienced. ¨It was the colors that fascinated him.¨ Out of all of the exciting memories he has been given, he loved the colors most of all. ¨His heart swelled with gratitude and pride.¨ Jonas feels special when he is granted receiver of memory and that is a rare feeling in his community. Jonas says on page 58, “Alone? Apart? Jonas listened with increasing unease. Greatly honored.” The community sees how important the receiver is and honors him greatly. ¨Such a selection is very, very rare.¨ The receiver is a rare assignment and Jonas has gained honor due to this. “‘Honor,’ he said firmly. ‘I have great honor. So will you. But you will find that it is not the same as power.’” Jonas thinks that his assignment gives him power, but it actually gives him honor. “There will be a whole part of your life which you won’t be able to share with a family, says the Giver on page 97.
