What impact has Secularism and ‘New Age’ religions in Australia had on the Australian religious Landscape?

Overview:

With secularism present within the Australian constitution, religion is faced with the threat of fading into oblivion. Secularism is the principle of separation of religious institutions and state. This has allowed for a rapid increase of irreligious Australians and non catholic religions. With the modernisation of Australian society, new age religions have arisen. The increase of immigration into Australia increases the adherents to non catholic and the irreligious persuasions available to Australians from it secular views concerning religion.

Challenges Created by Secularism:

However, recent research has indicated that contemporary social changes have caused the connection between higher education and a lack of faith to break down with the irreligious not being substantially more educated than the religious (James Lewis, 2015). With the link being broken, the irreligious are normalised reinforcing the multicultural nature of Australian culture.

The christian church is heavily affected by the increase of atheism and non christian religions. ‘The Age’ magazine interviewed Daniel about his opinion on society in relation to church adherent. He described his need to attend church as his way of keeping himself real in a society that is focused on money, greed and selfishness (2013). The Christian church is faced with diminishing adherent amounts. Faithful catholics are diminishing, with one in eight catholics attending mass on a weekend.
